Avoid Standing Water

Moisture is one of the biggest evils of decks. Though the surface of composite decks is non-porous, it doesn’t mean it will tolerate standing liquid-like puddles for longer hours. Since mildews are common environmental conditions that need moisture, air, and warmth to grow. Standing water can make the surface moist.

Redirect Downspouts

Make sure rainwater is not directly splashing down from your roof into the deck. It can lead to rainwater marks on the surface of the deck because of the force of water. Also, it leads to excessive exposure to moisture on the surface.

Ventilation of the underside of the Deck

Ventilation of the underside of the deck is necessary. It gives space for air to pass from the deck and prevents moisture. Ventilation leads to faster drying of the surface. So, keep the deck around 6 inches above the main surface for proper ventilation.

Use of Woven Rugs

The beauty of the deck is enhanced when a rug is placed just beneath the garden sofa. You can also plan something like this but use a woven rug. It is a breathable rug that prevents the locking of moisture. A rug with rubber backing must be avoided as it traps moisture.

Clean the Deck

Cleaning is a must for all types of decks. Your composite deck needs deep cleaning every 3 months or as per its use. If you are a party lover and like to throw parties on your deck, cleaning is a must after every party. Dusting is necessary. If there are any spills they need to remove quickly.

Remove Grease

Don’t ignore grease as it can settle on the deck if you leave it untreated. When something spills on the surface of the deck that is oily, it needs quick treatment. Use mild soapy detergent and a soft-bristle brush to clean the spill. Make sure all greasy area is cleaned properly. At the same time, red wine spills also need quick treatment to remove stains.

Check the Screws and Installation

After every 6-month or so, give a close look at the screws of your decks and edges. Make sure all screws are intact. Keep some basic tools to tighten the loose screws. Survey the edges of the deck. Make sure there is no splinter. However, composite decks don’t have the problem.
