Overview of industrial inkjet printing and inkjet printers
Inkjet technology has become a popular term as a reliable, inexpensive, fast, and easy technology for printing digital files, thanks to its quality and its presence on the user’s desktop. Despite the fact that inkjet technology for printing special things has existed since the 1950s, the effects of innovation in a wide range of industrial applications are becoming apparent today.
In theory, inkjet technology is simple, that is, a print head ejects a pattern of tiny drops of ink onto a substrate without any direct contact with it. Dots using different colored inks are joined to create photo-quality images.
However, practically the successful implementation and execution of this technology is very complex. The dots ejected from inkjet printers are just over 70 microns (the diameter of a human hair) and must be positioned very precisely to get resolutions as fine as 1440x1440 dpi (or dots per inch). Precision requires multidisciplinary skills such as fluid mechanics, chemistry and engineering, implementation and operation through physics, and also a combination of cautious design.
Industrial inkjet printing basically means using inkjet technology to print or deposit materials as a feature of the manufacturing process of any product on a production line. The principles remain as the inkjet printer you use at your desk. However, the scale is completely different in terms of speed and size of the machine, and also in a variety of fluids that need to be deposited. The introduction of industrial inkjet printing technology into manufacturing environments could potentially lead to a progressive change in existing capabilities with huge business benefits.
Industrial inkjet printing systems and their print heads are comprehensively classified as DOD (drop-on-demand) or CIJ (continuous) with variations within each classification. As the name implies, DOD technology ejects ink droplets from the print head only when needed. On the other hand, CJI technology ejects drops from the print head continuously. These drops are then coordinated with the substrate as print drops or in a collector for recirculation and reuse.
